Live art performance
Overview
Presented as part of Fierce Festival 2019, Make Banana Cry by Andrew Tay and Stephen Thompson interrogated Asian stereotypes and the transmission of cultural identity through destabilising theatrical form. The work unfolded with deliberate tension, challenging audience expectation and reframing representation within a live performance context.
Photographing the piece required attentiveness to gesture, proximity and atmosphere rather than spectacle. I focused on the performers’ physical language and the charged space between stage and audience, working within available light to retain the rawness of the setting.
The coverage documents a performance rooted in confrontation and inquiry, reflecting the tone of Fierce Festival’s contemporary programme.
