Imagine Dragons perform at BP Pulse Live in Birmingham during their Evolve World Tour in 2018
The Evolve World Tour was Imagine Dragons’ biggest production to date, transforming arenas into a sonic and visual journey that reflected the Evolve album’s themes of growth, colour and emotion. There were eight angled video screens of different sizes behind and around the band that displayed creative visuals, moods and dramatic imagery to match each song’s tone. Lighting fixtures were arranged not just overhead but also vertically along the sides of screens and on wings — creating depth and allowing effects to come at the audience from multiple angles.
Runway can be a hit or miss, if it's not too high and artists use it, photographers get great opportunities for close up shots which is a luxury you often don't get shooting big arena shows. On the other hand, runway means the pit is much bigger and you can find yourself on the wrong side of the action with not enough time to get where you're meant to be. It also creates this big empty space and separates you from the artist if they are not using it.
With experience you learn to predict some/most things but in live music nothing is a given and there's always an element of luck involved. Somehow that night I managed to be in the right spot at the right time for every single key moment culminating in Dan kneeling right in front of me within touching distance from my lens, the sort of intimate, close up moment that is extremely rare in arena setting. Just before I finished shooting there was also a massive confetti explosion which was a perfect ending of the entire experience. Truly one of my most memorable nights that still makes me smile when I think of it.
