Utilita Arena Birmingham, Dark synth pulse, arena scale

Overview
Overview
Depeche Mode photographed at the Utilita Arena Birmingham during Memento Mori tour in 2024.
I photograped this show before at Twinckenham stadium during the summer 2023 and because it was still light I didn't feel the atmosphere was quite right so, I really wanted to see it again but indoors instead.
The production relied on controlled lighting and a restrained stage design that allowed space around Dave and Martin as central figures. The giant screen acted as the visual centerpiece, displaying abstract imagery and stark monochrome graphics that shifted with each song. It gave the performance a cinematic scale, even inside the enclosed arena.
The setlist moved between new material and classic songs, opening with tracks like My Cosmos Is Mine and Wagging Tongue, before diving into fan favourites such as Policy of Truth and Personal Jesus. A particularly intimate section came when Martin Gore stepped forward for acoustic performances, momentarily shrinking the huge arena into something that felt almost like a theatre performance. One of the most emotional moments was “World in My Eyes,” dedicated to the late band member Andrew Fletcher, adding a reflective tone to the night.
The images were produced for editorial and live music coverage, documenting the atmosphere and scale of an arena show in Birmingham.
