Download Festival 2023
Donington Park

Overview
Overview
Download Festival is never subtle—and that’s exactly the point. In June 2023, Donington once again transformed into its own city for four unforgettable days, where music rolled across the fields and the skyline was shaped by towering stage rigs and a sea of raised arms. At this scale, Download is as much about endurance as it is about spectacle.
The lineup shifted effortlessly between styles and energy: from the sheer force of Metallica to the theatrical presence of Ghost, from Slipknot’s precision to the cinematic depth of Bring Me the Horizon. Each headline set brought its own visual identity, and as a photographer, you learn to adapt instinctively to every change in mood and atmosphere.
Across the weekend, bands like Evanescence, Halestorm, Disturbed, Parkway Drive, and Architects delivered their own distinct intensity. Whether it was explosive pyro and massive lighting setups or more stripped-back, emotionally charged moments, the challenge remained the same—capturing something real in the middle of it all.
One thing I was especially pleased with was catching the fireworks at the end of Metallica’s set. I’d had this idea of capturing not just the band, but the sheer scale of the crowd gathered at the main stage. With a bit of luck—and some help from the Ferris wheel crew, who kindly let me wait on standby and hop on at just the right moment—I managed to get exactly the shot I’d been hoping for.
