I photographed Tenacious D at the O2 Arena in London for PRG UK, capturing a show that blended musical comedy with rock in a way that was as visually striking as it was energetic. Every lighting and stage cue was designed to support the performance: dramatic when needed, theatrical without ever feeling over-the-top, and always ensuring the performers remained the visual and emotional focus of each frame.

From a photographer’s perspective, the production was a masterclass in balance. Moving from the sound desk to higher positions in the stalls allowed me to capture the full range of lighting setups, from sharp spotlights and bold color washes to subtle side-lighting that sculpted the performers’ forms. The cues were timed perfectly with musical beats, creating opportunities to freeze moments that highlighted both the comedy and the rock theatrics.

Shooting this way meant constantly adjusting for contrast and exposure: bright stage lights against darker backgrounds could easily blow out highlights, while side and backlighting required careful framing to preserve expression and clarity. The final images reflect not just the band’s energy, but also the precision and scale of the production—lighting, staging, and set design all working in harmony to create a visually compelling show.
