Download Festival may not be the first major music festival of the summer, but for me it has always marked the true beginning of festival season. Every year, arriving at Donington Park brings the same mix of excitement, anticipation, and gratitude. As a photographer, I never take for granted the opportunity to document one of the world's most iconic rock and metal festivals, and returning year after year still feels just as special.

This year's event was the 23rd edition of Download Festival and my 11th year spending the weekend among tens of thousands of heavy metal fans. There's something uniquely familiar about the festival: the sea of black band shirts, the distant rumble of soundchecks, and the collective energy that builds as the crowds gather in front of the stages. It feels like coming home.

The weather couldn't have been better, providing ideal conditions for both festivalgoers and photographers alike. Bright skies, dramatic stage lighting, and enthusiastic crowds created endless opportunities for capturing memorable moments.

As always, one of the biggest challenges was deciding where to be at any given moment. With multiple stages hosting artists throughout the weekend, schedule clashes were unavoidable. I wasn't able to photograph as many bands as I would have liked, which is perhaps the photographer's eternal frustration at festivals of this scale. There's always another set happening across the site, another unique moment unfolding elsewhere. I inevitably feel a little guilty for missing some performances, but until someone invents a way for me to clone myself, there's only so many places one person can be at once. In many ways, that's also part of what makes Download so specialthere's simply too much great music to experience it all.
