Overview

Bloodstock Open Air returned to Catton Park with its unmistakable intensity. Four days where the air feels heavier, the sound deeper, and the commitment from both artists and audience completely uncompromising. This is also a place where I feel at home and I get to spend four days with my heavy metal family.

Photographing Bloodstock again, but in a new year, is always interesting. The core spirit remains, yet each edition carries its own tone. In 2024, that tone was vast. From the commanding presence of Architects to the mythic scale of Amon Amarth, from the precision of Whitechapel to the raw force of Carcass, every stage demanded focus and anticipation.

Bands such as Malevolence, Beast in Black, Combichrist and Hatebreed brought contrasting textures, from tightly controlled aggression to theatrical spectacle. Photographing metal at this level means understanding movement before it happens. You watch the body language. You feel the tempo shift. You prepare for the jump, the hair whip, the crowd surge.

But Bloodstock is never only about what happens on stage. The atmosphere across Thursday through Sunday told its own story. Dust rising under late afternoon light. Fans in battle jackets leaning against barriers. Circle pits forming and dissolving. The loyalty within this audience is visible. It translates into frames filled with raised fists, closed eyes, and complete immersion.

Festival photography here is technical and instinctive in equal measure. Daylight sets give way to saturated evening lighting within hours. Smoke thickens. Backlights carve silhouettes. You adapt constantly, but the aim remains the same. To capture not just volume, but intention.

Bloodstock 2024 felt expansive yet grounded. Powerful yet precise. A festival built on conviction, and one that rewards genuine understanding of the music and the culture that surrounds it.
