Birmingham Royal Ballet
Overview
LUNA by Birmingham Royal Ballet was the first ballet I had the chance to document from start to finish, and it was an extraordinary journey. From the first studio rehearsals through to opening night, I followed the creation of a completely new work, capturing the evolution of movement, character, and stagecraft as it unfolded.
The production was built by an all-female creative team—five choreographers, each developing their own section—so every rehearsal had its own energy, rhythm, and visual identity. My focus was on how the dancers interpreted each choreographer’s vision, the nuances of line and timing, and the way sequences layered together to form the larger narrative. I photographed intimate moments of exploration in the studio as well as the gradual construction of the stage environment, watching costumes, lighting, and staging elements slowly come together.
Documenting LUNA wasn’t just about capturing finished poses—it was about tracing the process: the experimentation, the adjustments, and the breakthroughs that only happen behind the scenes. By opening night, I had a portfolio that reflected not only the final production but the entire creative journey, highlighting both the artistry of the dancers and the remarkable collaboration of the team who brought this new ballet to life.
