Low amber light revealed the musicians before the dancers stepped into frame. England on Fire by BalletBoyz at Sadler’s Wells Theatre on 8 November 2023 combined contemporary choreography with a live folk-inspired score, the stage split between band and movement. The production relied on contrast rather than excess, allowing rhythm and line to carry the narrative.

Photographing the performance meant working with both musical and physical timing. As a UK dance photographer, I focused on the interaction between dancers and live musicians, capturing peak extension, floor work and the shifts in tone shaped by lighting transitions.

The result reflects a performance built on collaboration, where choreography and sound remained in constant dialogue.
