Contemporary dance, live music
Overview
Photographing England on Fire by BalletBoyz at Sadler’s Wells Theatre on 8 November 2023 was an intense and immersive experience. From the moment the dancers took the stage, I was struck by the sheer physicality and precision of every movement—this is a company that blends athleticism, artistry, and storytelling in a way that’s electrifying to witness up close.
Working behind the lens, my focus was on capturing both the ensemble’s powerful formations and the individual moments of expression that give the performance its emotional impact. The choreography demanded anticipation: leaps, lifts, and floor work happened in rapid succession, and timing was everything to freeze a fleeting line or extension at its peak. I also worked to play with the dramatic lighting—its contrast, shadows, and pools of intensity highlighted the sculptural quality of each movement, while creating visually striking compositions across the stage.
What I love about photographing BalletBoyz is the tension between raw energy and controlled precision. For England on Fire, it meant documenting not just the athletic feats, but the underlying narrative and emotion that drive the work. Every shot tells a story of discipline, collaboration, and the sheer fire of performance—capturing moments that linger long after the final curtain.
