Birmingham Royal Ballet
Overview
Photographing Black Sabbath: The Ballet on opening night with Birmingham Royal Ballet was an electric experience. The theatre buzzed with energy as dancers moved with intensity and precision, their choreography echoing the dark, powerful spirit of the music. From sweeping ensemble sequences to intimate duets, every moment demanded timing, anticipation, and an eye for detail. Then came the shock and thrill of Tony Iommi’s surprise appearance on stage. Capturing him live, guitar in hand, amidst the dancers’ athleticism and the audience’s roar, created some of my favourite images of the night. The lighting, the movement, and the palpable excitement all came together in shots that felt both historic and cinematic.
Photographing opening night was about more than documenting the choreography—it was about capturing the energy, atmosphere, and sheer spectacle of a landmark event where classical performance met rock legend. Every frame tells the story of collaboration, artistry, and the unforgettable thrill of seeing Tony Iommi on a ballet stage.
