Contemporary dance production
Overview
I photographed a rehearsal of Black Victorians, created by Artistic Director and Choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles. The work was inspired by nineteenth-century studio portraits featured in Black Chronicles II, curated by Renée Mussai at Autograph in London.
Working within a rehearsal environment shifts the emphasis. Without full costume or stage lighting, attention falls on line, gesture and the structure of the choreography. I focused on stillness as much as movement, allowing the performers’ presence to reflect the formal quality of the original photographic references.
As a UK dance and theatre photographer, rehearsal coverage documents the discipline behind the final production, creating imagery for press, archives and future touring materials.
