Birmingham International Dance Festival (UK Premiere)
Overview
Blood, Water, Earth is an international First Nations womxn’s collaboration created by Kaha:wi Dance Theatre. The work weaves performance, video and music, channeling ancestral, elemental and dreamworld energies as a physical incantation that affirms kinship with all living entities and traverses sacred alignment from cosmos to womb to earth. It brings together artists from Turtle Island (North America) and Aotearoa (New Zealand) in a dialogue of Indigenous worldviews and creative languages.
I photographed rehearsal and performances ahead of the UK premiere during the Birmingham International Dance Festival in June 2022 at Birmingham Hippodrome. Moving through studio and stage environments, I captured the ritualistic physicality, collaboration and rich visual tableaux that define the work, creating imagery for press and programme materials that reflects its visceral power and deep cultural significance.
