Cirque du Soleil
Overview
Photographing LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall in January 2020 was a truly unforgettable experience and a delightful start of the new year. The production blends Mexican-inspired imagery with breathtaking aerial work, contortion, and acrobatics, all set against a stage that seemed to dance with falling water. Having photographed several Cirque du Soleil shows before, LUZIA instantly became my favourite—there’s something magical about the way water interacts with light and movement, adding an extra layer of wonder to every frame.
From behind the camera, timing was everything. Capturing performers at the peak of their leaps or in the midst of complex lifts meant anticipating not just their motion, but the way water droplets and reflections would catch the light. The constantly shifting stage lighting, refracted through spray and puddles, made every shot a moment of discovery. I focused on the tension between the performers’ strength and the fluidity of the set—on the elegant interaction between bodies and water, and the fleeting moments of intimacy amid the spectacle.
