The Exchange - Birmingham
Overview
Helios opening night at The Exchange, Birmingham — March 2026.
From March through to November 2026, The Exchange is home to Helios, a large-scale illuminated sculpture by artist Luke Jerram. Suspended within the space, the artwork offers a detailed and atmospheric representation of the sun, using high-resolution solar imagery and subtle lighting.
Opening night marked the public’s first chance to step inside and encounter the installation. As a photographer, it was a captivating scene to document — the warm glow of the sculpture transforming the architecture, drawing people in, and creating moments of quiet awe and reflection.
The evening also featured a live conversation hosted by Alice Roberts, bringing together Luke Jerram and Professor Bill Chaplin from the University’s School of Physics and Astronomy. Their discussion added depth to the experience, exploring the intersection of art and solar science, and offering insight into the research and inspiration behind the piece.
Across the venue, guests were invited to take part in artist-led activities with Sadie Barnett and Juneau Projects, adding a playful and interactive dimension to the night.
Overall, the opening night felt like a thoughtful blend of art, science, and community — and a rewarding event to capture through the lens.
