Photographing Lionel Richie at Utilita Arena Birmingham during the Say Hello To The Hits Tour in 2025 was an exhilarating experience that perfectly captured the charisma, stamina, and showmanship Lionel brings to the stage even after decades at the top of the music industry.

From the moment he appeared, it was immediately clear where the energy of the night was coming from. Richie seems to generate an almost endless reservoir of vitality: apart from moments at the piano, he is constantly moving across the stage, engaging with his band, and connecting with the audience. Every song is punctuated by gestures, smiles, and interaction that feel spontaneous yet effortless.

Technically, shooting from the sound desk presented some limitations, but it also offered a stable position with excellent line of sight for full-stage compositions. While I missed the flexibility of pit access, it didn’t diminish the enjoyment of the night. The combination of Lionel’s energy, the audience’s response, and the carefully executed lighting made it a thoroughly rewarding shoot.
