Epic theatre, large-scale staging
Overview
Heavy drapery and sculptural set pieces framed the stage before the first movement settled into rhythm. The Mongol Khan, photographed on 17 November 2023, combined historical narrative with large-scale ensemble staging, layered costume and dramatic lighting design. The production relied on visual weight and symmetry to carry its tone.
Photographing the performance required balancing scale with clarity. As a UK theatre photographer, I focused on formation, costume detail and the depth of the stage, working to retain definition within rich colour washes and shadow.
The result reflects both the grandeur of the staging and the disciplined structure underpinning the performance.
