Best Kept Secret
Best Kept Secret
Discovery, Atmosphere and Electric Variety, 2015

Overview
Overview
Best Kept Secret has always felt carefully curated. Set within open space and water, it carries a sense of discovery rather than overwhelm. The 2015 edition unfolded over three days in June, and what struck me most was its range.
Photographing a festival like this means shifting tone constantly. From the brooding intensity of Alt-J to the restless energy of The Libertines, from the expansive presence of Future Islands to the melodic control of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, each stage demanded a different rhythm behind the camera.
There was sharp movement from artists such as FIDLAR and Circa Waves, contrasted with the immersive atmospherics of Chet Faker and SOHN. Even within the same afternoon, the visual language would shift entirely. Bright daylight sets by the water gave way to saturated evening lighting and layered smoke as the sun dropped.
What I enjoy most about festival photography in this setting is the audience. Best Kept Secret attracts a deeply engaged crowd. You see concentration rather than distraction. Friends lying back on grass between sets. Faces turned fully toward the stage. The atmosphere images matter as much as the headliners. They frame the context. They tell the story of the weekend.
Photographing artists such as The Vaccines, Death Cab for Cutie and A$AP Rocky within one festival underlines what makes Best Kept Secret distinctive. It is eclectic without feeling chaotic. Confident without being excessive.
For me, Best Kept Secret 2015 was about fluidity. About adapting instinctively to light, tone and mood. A festival built on variation and curiosity, and one that rewards attentiveness as much as speed.
